Research: Initial digipak design ideas

I want to create cover art work for my album in the style of outlines. The purpose of this is to convey the themes of the music itself in a simplistic way which adheres to some of the conventions of a indie/alternative genre. This idea was inspired by both the Vanity album artwork, as well as the simplicity of the Catfish and the Bottlemen album cover. Outline artwork is popular in todays media, therefore it wasn't difficult for me to source various designs of hands, faces, foliage and bottles.

Here are some of the images that I found on google that are in the style that I wish to achieve using my own images, collated into a mood board:

After researching outline artwork, I realised that the subjects that I want to create digital drawings of are hands, faces and flowers. These all appeal to me as they can be used to compliment the narrative of the music itself. The music video that I have created contains images of bottles (of the alcoholic variety), flowers alive and then dead and the protagonist's face and hands. I think that the inclusion of hands will work well as a number of shots contain or even focus on his hands. Looking at this footage, it's notable that his signet ring can be seen in all of them. The ring would bring a line drawing of a hand from general, to focused and linked directly to the music video.

Here are some of the shots containing his hand and ring:

I will combine this style with a similar one that adds areas of colour to the drawings. Some examples that I found of this:

These examples use splashes of colour to highlight certain areas of the drawings. In some, I saw that the background was filled in with either a block pastel or bright colour or with a textured background. I like both styles therefore I will develop my digipak and then chose whether I will use a textured or untextured background design.

To summarise and conclude my research, I will create cover designs using photos that I have taken and transform them into line drawings that will be placed in various areas of my CD, front cover, back cover and interior.
